Tough to Find Star Pattern Civil War Soldier's Canteen
Click on an image to enlarge
Well here is a piece that you seldom see offered for sale. This is the pattern of canteen illustrated and described on page 203 of the Canteen Book by Mike O'Donnell. In the book, he tells how the 5 pointed stars on the sides were evidently intended to reinforce the metal rather than just be a decoration. These canteens have the small size spouts that he states are generally early war in manufacture, mostly 1861-1862. He adds how the known canteens of this pattern were carried by soldiers from Ohio and Illinois and carried on Sherman's March to the Sea. This one has all three of the strap loops intact as well as the spout at the top. It has the original stopper stuck in the spout and the stopper chain is still present as well. This is a very tough to find version of canteen. It is in attractive display condition with a dark attic tone all over.
