SHILOH! 8 Inch Seacoast Watercap Shell From The USS Lexington or USS Tyler
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a cool Civil War projectile from one of the most famous of battles! This is an original excavated round shell from the battle of Shiloh. During the battle of Shiloh, General Grant had two ships that were firing on the Confederates. They even were instructed to fire into the Southern positions every 15 minutes so the Confederates couldn't get any sleep. The ships were the USS Lexington and the USS Tyler. This shell has the 8 inch diameter and the USS Lexington has 4 of the eight inch guns and the USS Tyler had six of the guns. it has the seacoast pattern watercap style fuse at the top. The center of the cap blew out and that allowed it to be disarmed after it was dug. On page 54 of Jack Bell's book, Civil War Heavy Ordnance, he states that these balls with the watercap fuse are a rarity of 8 out of 10. The ball has the straight out of the ground look. You can see one of the tong holes at the top with the other still filled in with dirt. This is a cool big shell with an even cooler history!
