Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great pair of items! This is an original CDV image and ID stencil from a soldier from the Keystone state. The first item is a brass covered tin stencil that has the soldier's name "A.J. EGGLESTON" over "BAT. M. 2 PA ART." The stencil measures 3-3/8ths inches by 1-1/4th inches. The soldier's bought these from stores or traveling sutlers to mark their pieces so they could be identified. There is also a CDV image of the soldier wearing his enlisted style frock coat with the military vest underneath. You can see his watch chain coming out of his pocket. In his hand, he holds his forage cap and you can see that it has the tarred leather rain cover. On the back of the card, it has the photographer marking of the Winter firm in Syracuse, New York. It also has the George Washington paper tax stamp intact. It has the blue ink name of Allen Eggleston at the top of the paper. The records show that Allen J. Eggleston enlisted on August 19th 1862 as a private in the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. He served until he was mustered out on January 2nd 1865. It notes that he was wounded during the battle of Chaffin's Farm, Virginia on September 29th 1864 with a "Severe wound in right forearm, amputated". The Battle of Chaffin's Farm and New Market Heights, also known as Laurel Hill and combats at Forts Harrison, Johnson, and Gilmer, was fought in Virginia on September 29–30, 1864, as part of the siege of Petersburg in the American Civil War. Eggleston was one of the men that fought bravely during the battle. You get the CDV image as well as the brass stencil for $950.
