Great Looking Over & Under "Tap Lock" Flintlock by Hunter of Edinburgh
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is one cool little gun! This is an original double barrel flintlock small pistol from about 1800. This is a .36 caliber pistol. These popular pistols were intended to provide two relatively rapid shots by tapping lever on a rotary pan. (For practical purposes it took more than just a tap.) For the second shot, this pistol only needed to be re-cocked and frizzen set back in place. This scarce all brass pistol has screw barrels and they still unscrew as you see in the images. The left side of boxlock action is engraved "G. HUNTER &" "CO." on oval surrounded by flags. On the right hand side, it is similar and is engraved "EDINBURGH". The English gun maker's book states that Hunter was in business from 1780 until about 1820. The gun has the original frizzen, rotary pan, reinforced cock, trigger guard and trigger that are made of steel. It is crafted with a bag style grip that is brass. All of the brass parts have a pleasing mustard color. The handle of the gun has the engraving on the sides as well as on the wrist top of the grip. A small part of frizzen spring is broken, otherwise mechanically good. This is a cool little gun with a lot of character.
