This is an attractive looking excavated state seal uniform coat button for the state of South Carolina. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." This is one of the nice early ones that has the plain background where most of the later ones have the lined background. The original back and shank are present on the reverse. It has the maker's mark on the back from the firm of J.M.L. & W.H. Scovill Company of Waterbury, Connecticut. This is the button that is listed as figure SC226a1 in Tice's button book and SC4 in Albert's button book. One thing that is special about this button is that it is one of the gold washed ones and it still retain trace some of the original gold on the button's face. This one is in fine excavated shape and will be a fine addition to your collection.
