This is a nice looking Confederate made cannon shell. This is the classic 3 inch version of the famous Read shell and is the style to collectors as the Virginia pattern. They get this nickname because most of the excavated examples were found in that state. It has the full copper sabot intact at the base of the shell. You can still see the beautiful copper tone to the sabot patina. The body of the shell has been thoroughly cleaned and coated for display and preservation. One thing that I love about this shell is that you can clearly see the lines where the shell was cast in the foundry. At the top of the shell it has the open fuse hole as this is the version that would've used the wooden adapter for a paper style time fuse. This is a nice looking original Civil War Confederate cannon shell that is Southern all the way.
