This is a good-looking original Civil War dated cavalry saber. This is the classic model 1860 that was carried by the Union cavalryman during the Civil War and is the style most people associate with the war between the states. The sword has a full-length blade with the majority of the production date of 1865 stamped at the base. You can also see the "US" mark marking and the inspector initials of "G.W.C.". These are the initials of the man that inspected the sword blade for the U.S. Government, George W. Chapman. The back of the blade has some of the desirable scroll style maker's mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the foremost maker of Civil War swords and sabers for the Union government. The guard and pommel cap have a great untouched color and look to the brass. On the top of the pommel cap you can see the matching and correct inspector initials of "G.W.C.". The original leather is present on the handle as well as all of the double twist brass wire wrap and displays quite well. It is accompanied by the original metal scabbard. The scabbard has the original throat and drag intact as well as the mounts and rings. It scabbard is painted black and as you can see, there is old pitting underneath the paint. By the middle mount, there is a hole as you see in the images. This is a nice looking authentic 1865 dated Ames cavalry saber and scabbard.
