Here is a great looking officer's coat from the state of Rhode Island. This is a wonderful double breasted frock style officer's coat made of the dark blue broadcloth material. The front of the coat has the two rows of nine original Civil War Rhode Island state seal buttons. Each of these buttons are constructed with the medium size rims which is a trat of being produced later in the Civil War. Each of the buttons are backmarked from the "D. EVANS & CO. ATTLEBORO MASS" maker. The coat has the long pattern skirt which is correct for Civil War production and has the correct Civil War raw edge along the bottom. The sleeves are full-length with the functional cuffs. All six of the cuff buttons are intact at the end of the sleeves. The elbows are the late war thinner size. at 7 inches with the 6 inch size at the cuff. The collar is 1-3/8ths inches tall. On the back of the coat, it has all four of the coat size Rhode Island buttons intact and it has the pockets in the tail of the coat. When you open the coat up, you are greeted by the original and beautifully crafted green silk liner. The lined sleeve linings are each intact. There is a tag in the collar that is marked with the tailor "THOS W. CHACE & CO./PROVIDENCE R.I.". This firm was owned by General Thomas W. Chace who served with the Rhode Island militia and in 1861 helped form the Burnside Zouaves, now known as the United Train of Artillery, and served as adjutant and major of that command. According to the book, History of Washington and Kent Counties, Rhode Island by J. R. Cole; W.W.Preston & Co., New York, 1889 he states that "Since 1856 he has carried on business successfully in Providence. He still continues business on Westminster street, under the firm name of T. W. Chace & Co." The liner of the coat has the brown polished cotton pocket bags still intact. This is a very fine looking state of Rhode Island officer's frock coat that would have been made late in the Civil War or just after. It displays beautifully and is priced about half of what an early war production coat would sell for these days.
