This is a great piece of history! It is an original Civil War mortar shell. This is the large size that was designed for the 8 inch mortar that was a mainstay for the heavy artillery units of the Civil War. This one is in good shape with the pitting from the years in the ground. On the top of the ball it has the large open hole that the wooden fuse holder would have gone when it was going to be shot. On each side of this fuse hole it has the tong holes. This is where the lifting tongs would have inserted to make loading this heavy ball easier. To give you an idea of the size of this ball the last picture is this ball sitting beside a standard 4.62 inch diameter 12# cannonball. The price doesn't include the 12#er. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was recovered years ago in the area of Spanish Fort, Alabama which is outside of Mobile, Alabama. The Battle of Spanish Fort took place from March 27 to April 8, 1865, in Baldwin County, Alabama, as part of the Mobile Campaign of the Western Theater of the American Civil War. After the Union victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Mobile nevertheless remained in Confederate hands. This is nice looking large size Civil War artillery projectile.
