Great Looking Excavated 3 Inch Dyer Cannon Shell with Grooved Sabot
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great looking 3-inch Dyer pattern Civil War cannon shell. These Dyers are often referred to by collectors as a Confederate Burton as it is known that at least a few were fired by Southern cannon. This one is in fine shape. It has a nice amount of the original zinc time fuse holder present at the top of the shell. The body is in nice shape all over. The lead sabot is present at the bottom which is nice because most of the time when these were shot from the cannon they flew off. It is the version of the sabot that was made with the flame grooves which lets us know it was a latter war production shell. The failure to explode was a problem that Dyer shells were famous for. This is a great looking shell that has been disarmed for safety, preservation and display and now looks very pleasing.
