27th Pennsylvania Infantry Civil War Staff & Field Officer Sword by Horstmann
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful original Civil War staff & field officer's sword and we know who carried it. This is the classic style that was worn by high ranking officers of the Civil War. These swords are easily distinguished from the foot officer's swords because of the large "US" lettering in the basket of the hand guard. This one has a light gray tome patina with the ornate etching on each side of the blade. The front side of the blade has the eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto along with military and floral designs. At the base of the blade it has the engraved retailer mark of the famous Philadelphia firm of William H. Horstmann & Sons. They were one of the premiere retailers during the Civil War. On the back side it has the large "USC" in the center that is flanked by floral and patriotic designs. On the handle of the sword it has the original grip intact. This is the high quality version that has the sharkskin grip instead of leather. The skin has a rich gray color from ago as you can see. It also has the entire wire wrap intact with the wrap being the twisted spring style copper wire. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. This is the scabbard style that is made of brass and metal. The brass has a beautiful untouched color all over. This is the higher grade sword that has the floral pattern going all the way around the ring mounts. What makes this sword extra special is what is engraved on the top mount of the scabbard. It proudly reads "Presented / to / Capt. Wm. Jatho / Comp B / 27th Reg. Pa. Vols / by the members / of his Company as / a token of esteem." in jeweler quality lettering. The records show that William Jatho was a resident of Philadelphia when he enlisted on May 31, 1861 as a Captain. He was commissioned into B Company of the Pennsylvania 27th Infantry. He resigned on January 18, 1863. The 27th actively participated in a number of major engagements while Jatho was serving. He likely action at both battles at Bull Run and the Battle of Cross Keys. Printouts of Jatho's service and that of the 27th Pennsylvania accompany the sword. This is a fine looking original Civil War staff & field officer sword for your relic room walls.
