Very Rare! 12 Cannon Ball With the Confederate Replacement Fuse Plug
Click on an image to enlarge
I have been in this hobby for 35 years and this is only the second shell of this style that I have ever ben able to offer. This is a Civil War Borman pattern cannonball. These were fired out of a smoothbore cannon with the 4.62 inch bore diameter that was referred to as a 12 pounder. The regular Borman ball is one of the most common projectiles of the war but this one is extra special because of the fuse. The Confederate were having trouble with the regular Borman time fuses. In 1863, the Confederate stopped manufacturing their Borman fuses and started using these "Replacement" fuses. These are basically a copper fuse holder like other Confederate shells but this one is very large. Large enough to full the hole where the Borman fuse would have gone. They were designed to hold a paper time fuze. This one has a beautiful fuse as you see. The ball has been cleaned and coated for display and preservation. Don't miss this one!
