Scarce Gorman of Providence Retailer Marked Civil War Foot Officer's Sword

This is a nice looking Civil War sword from a tough to find retailer! It is an original Civil War era foot officer's sword in scabbard. The sword measures 38 inches in overall length with the blade making up 32 of those inches. This is the version that has the blade that was made by the Collins firm of Hartford, Connecticut and is so marked at the base of the blade along with the 1862 production date. Collins was one of the premiere manufacturers of edged weapons in America during the Civil War. On the top mount of the scabbard, you see the clear and scarce retailer stamping of "GORHAM & CO. / PROVIDENCE / RI.". The maker's book shows they started business in 1831 and sold high quality pieces for the Union soldiers during the Civil War. They are sill in business today. You can still clearly see the etching on each side with the floral and patriotic designs on the blade. The front of the blade has the spread wing eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" below the eagle. The back has the script style letter "US" in the center. This is the version with the shark skin covered wooden grip handle and it is present and has a beautiful well worn look. The wire is restored twisted double strand brass wire with a fine look. It has the brass handguard and pommel cap with a attic style golden honey patina all over the brass. The sword is accompanied by he original leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard is complete with the original throat, middle mount and drag intact. The screw on the back of the drag is a modern replacement. The base of the blade has been crudely etched "V376202" and it appears again on the throat of the scabbard.
