Section of Lead Sabot for 3 Inch Hotchkiss Shell with Rifling Marks
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice Civil War artifact that is still affordable. It is a section of an original lead sabot section for a Civil War rifled cannon shell. This is the pattern that went on the Hotchkiss patent cannon shell. The sabot is the part of the shell that was softer than the iron body and was designed to take the rifling of the cannon barrel. This caused the shell to be more accurate in flight. You can see from the rifling marks on the outer side of the sabot that this one was fired and was thrown off in flight. It appears to be the entire sabot and looks to be the size for the 3 inch diameter Hotchkiss. It is 5-1/2 inches in length so it would be about half of the full sabot. This is a neat Civil War artillery piece!
