Very Scarce Original Officer's Pattern Eagle Martingale

What a great piece of history! This is an original Civil War officer's martingale. These adorned the strap on the breast of a horse. This is the pattern that is illustrated as plate 425 on the O'Donnell & Campbell's Buckle & Plate book. They state how it is and officer's version of martingale made circa 1861. It is made of stamped brass with the lead fill in the back to make the plate more durable. The stamped brass has the beautiful image of the Union eagle with the upturned wings. The eagle has the branch of peace in one talon and the arrows of war int he other. It has the rays and stars along the top edge. This one is in well worn non-excavated condition and has been attached to a thick piece of heart-shaped leather by small iron square nails. At the top of the leather, it has the circular brass ring. In my 30+ years in the business, this is the first non-excavated martingale of this type that I have been able to offer.
