This is an original Civil War soldier’s letter. This letter is written from Dalton, Georgia and is dated December 1st 1863. The soldier was writing home to "Dear Mother". Since he was writing to someone so close, he didn’t enclose his regiment so we can’t say for sure who he served with. He tells his Mom that " I have come safe through the retreat with the top of my cooking utinsils, l saddle blanket, & my caison with two ammunition chests for the want of horses to pull them. I eat my pork raw about 2 pounds a week and manage to cook once a day in an oven that was saved & now serves the whole company. Our rations are short, sometimes no meat at all yet we live & the wonder is no grumbling is heard. The men bear all things patiently with a little extra curseing. Oh what a selfish world this is. We see more of it in the army than elsewhere, especially among the officers who wer never anything before the war began. "The paper measures 9-1/4ths inches by 5-1/2 inches in overall size. The letter is handwritten on scrap paper in ancient old brown pencil. It comes with a type-written translation of the contents. It is a neat original Civil War soldier’s letter.
