Gorgeous Non-Excavated Silver Maltese Cross 19th Army Corps 1st Division Badge

Here is a great non-excavated piece! It is an original excavated 19th Army Corps 1st Division badge. The XIX Corps was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War. It spent most of its service in Louisiana and the Gulf, though several units fought in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The XIX Corps was created on December 14, 1862, and assigned to Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, the commander of the Department of the Gulf. The corps comprised all Union troops then occupying Louisiana and east Texas. It originally consisted of four divisions, numbering 36,000 men. This is the version of Corps Badge that is designed like a Maltese Cross. This particular example is constructed using a single piece of silver. You can see that the original silver that has turned gray with age. It has the hand detailing on the face including the "1st" int he center which denotes the 1st Division of the 19th Corps. The piece measures approximately 1 inch by 1-1/16th inches in overall size. On the reverse of the badge you can see the T-Bar attachment pin is soldered in place at one time. It isn't often that you see one of these delicate pieces in such wonderful condition.
