This is a gorgeous looking high grade pre war New York Staff Officer’s belt featuring a heavily gilded sword belt plate with an applied silver wreath surrounding the letters "NY". Both the buckle & keeper are stamped "18". The belt has no sword straps but the suspension loops are present. The belt is housed in its original box bottom with the original paper label that reads "N.Y. Regulation SWORD BELTS". The name "I.W. Ainsworth" is written at the top of the label in period ink. Evidently Ainsworth was a purchasing officer for the NYNG and I think many of these boxes were received and marked in this fashion. Ainsworth also served. The records show that the 10th New York State national Guard was a militia unit that was mustered into Civil War volunteer service as the 177th New York Volunteer Infantry. Ainsworth was the appointed Colonel of the Regiment. The regiment served in the 3rd Brigade of General Sherman’s division in the Department of the Gulf. The served with the Department of the Gulf and saw heavy service at the Battle and Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. This is the EXACT belt and box that are used for the illustration on page 15 of the classic book, The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics by O'Donnell and Sylvia. This is a great looking Civil War high grade New York officer's sword belt & buckle in the original box!
