RIFLED & SIGHTED! .69 Caliber Model 1840 Musket By Pomeroy Dated 1843
Click on an image to enlarge
This gun has a great look all over! This is the scarce model 1840 pattern military musket that was made by the firm of L. Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They only made 7,000 of these initially and a very small handful of them were converted to percussion and this one was RIFLED! The lockplate has a crystal clear "L. POMEROY" maker's mark in front of the hammer. Behind the hammer it has the production date of "1843". The action is super crisp on all positions. The barrel is 41-1/2 inches in length (Originally would have been 42 inches) with the correct proof marks at the breech of the barrel. It has the small "U.S." stamping as well as the "JCB". The "JCB" stands for the Government inspector, Joseph C. Bragg. Also at the base of the barrel it has the clear production date of 1841. This is one of the rifled barrels and it still has clear lands and grooves of the rifling when you look down the barrel. It has the long range rear sight intact and the front sight has been altered with a larger blade long ago. The stock of this gun has a very pleasing look. On the flat opposite of the lockplate you can see the 2 inspectors cartouches where the gun was approved for military service. One is that of "WAT" for the inspector William A. Thornton and the other is "NWP" for Nahun W. Patch. The gun has the two original sling swivels intact as well as the fine modern made ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. This is a great looking weapon for any collection!
