1863 Navy Agent's office Letter to the Commander of the USS Passaic

Here is an original letter written to the Commander of the Iron Clad Passaic, Lieutenant Commander Edward Simson. Edward Simpson (March 3, 1824 – December 1, 1888) would go on to rise to the rank of Read Admiral. In the lower left hand corner, it has Simpson's name and rank and notes that he is onboard the U.S.S. Passaic. The letter is written on stationery from the Navy Agent's Office in New York and is dated July 20th 1863. Simpson is being instructed that the steamer Star of the South will be towing the Passaic into harbor instead of the steamer Fulton. The letter measures 9-3/4ths inches by 7-1/2 inches in overall size. It is accompanied by a modern Xerox image of Simpson in uniform.
