This is an excellent non-excavated coat size button for the state of Virginia. On the face is the classic Virginia state seal in the center with "VIRGINIA" at the top and "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS". This is the motto of Virginia which translates to "THUS UNTO TYRANTS". The button has a fine look with a beautiful untouched patina on the face that gives the button a wonderful look. The original back and shank is present with the nice, clear Civil War backmark of "SUPERIOR QUALITY ". This backmark was used by the actual maker, Steele & Johnson, so the retailer could sell the buttons without advertising for the true maker. This is the staff officer's version and this style is listed as VA20 in Albert's button book and VA261c4 in Tice's button book. This is a great looking non-excavated original Civil War Virginia state seal.
