Excellent Non-Dug Confederate Staff Officer Vest Button CS5av
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original non-excavated 19mm vest size Confederate staff officer's button. This is the style listed as CS5av in Albert's button book. It has a beautiful droop-wing eagle on the face with lots of of patina like it has been in the vet's drawer for a century. The eagle is in front of a lined background and there are the 11 stars around the edge. The back and shank are intact with a clear "EXTRA RICH TREBLE GILT" backmark. It is a high quality button that would have been imported through the Union blockade for purchase by a well-to-do Confederate staff officer. This is the same style button that is on the coat that General Lee wore when he surrendered at Appomattox. The coat is now on display at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. You'll never own that one but you can have this beauty for $175.00.
