1861 Rankin Patented Leg Irons From the Matthew Forte Collection
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat piece of police historical memorabilia. This is and original pair of Civil War patented leg irons. This set is the leg version of the handcuffs like the ones illustrated on page 85 of the book entitled "American Police Equipment, A Guide to Early Restraints, Clubs & Lanterns" by Matthew G. Forte. They are made with the Rankin Patent style and they have the faint remnants of the patent dates on each cuff. These shackles were made by Andrew Rankin Manufacturing of Philadelphia. Although surface rust prevents seeing the stamping, it is "A. Rankin Philadelphia” and PATENT DEC 10 1861”. The US Patent 33,917 was issued on that date to Alfred Delestatius of Philadelphia, who assigned the patent to Andrew Rankin of Philadelphia. The patent is for "improvements to manacles and shackles." They are in attractive dark tone patina condition and they have a replacement key as well. This set is from the personal collection of Mr. Forte. The last image shows the cover of his book. This set is in very fine shape for display.
