Here is an original hat that has the look! This is one of the commercially produced Civil War private purchase forage cap. It has the classic design that is referred to by collectors as an "forage cap." The hat itself is constructed with a wool body. Over the years, the material has retained a beautiful blue tone with hints of the green here and there. It has some old mothing that is mentioned for exactness. The chin strap carries a brass buckle in the front, fixed on the cap by two eagle buttons. It is produced with a bound leather visor with tarred black leather on the underside. This is one of the traits of the high quality manufacturing techniques used on quality uniform and headgear pieces imported for sale during the Civil War to wealthy customers. When you turn the hat over your greeted by the sweat band that has a well-worn look and shows some wear. It still retains some of the original green polished cotton lining as you can see with the quilted top lining. This is a wonderful looking original Civil War high grade forage cap.
