Here is an original document from the last days of the Civil War. This 1-page document from the Confederate Conscription office in Richmond dated from January 19th 1865. It is written in brown ink on the gray tone faded blue paper. It is a special orders. The first section is illegible because of an old scotch tape repair. The second section is telling of the appointment of John H. Snead as an enrolling officer. When I looked his name up in the records, I found that Snead had served with the 14th Virginia Infantry. Snead had been taken prisoner during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd 1863. It also shows that he was detailed to the Conscript Bureau and Medical Board on April 14th 1864. The special order paper is signed by order of Lt. Col. J.C. Shields. It measures 7-3/4ths inches by 10 inches in overall size. A Brief printout of the services of the names on the document will accompany the paper.
