This is one of the coolest gun designs of the Civil War era. This is the scarce Civil War Colt revolving carbine. Colt manufactured these guns from 1856 until 1864. In the Colt firearms book by RL Wilson. He shows that they only made 2,000 of these in 56 caliber for the British market. This one has the full-length 21 inch barrel length. This is one of the shortest barrel length that Colt manufactured for revolving carbines. The barrel is full-length and still has the period replacement front sight intact. At the breech of the barrel you can tell that they utilized the folding leaf style sight that was replaced with a stud style sight. Along the top of the frame it has traces of the maker's Mark that reads "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The mechanics of the gun still rotates but it no longer locks up correctly. It has the distinctive fluted cylinder and is the version that measures 2 3/4 inches in length. In one of the flutes you can still read the "PATENTED SEPT. 10TH 1860." Some of the markings on the gun have been restamped in modern times. The gun has serial numbers of 9,434. These guns are designed with one of the most interesting configurations of the war. It is basically a Colt pistol on steroids. This design, in theory, would work as well as the colt pistols of the day. In reality, the weight of the cylinder as well as the use of the model 1855 colt mechanics was troubled from the beginning. These guns were notorious for chain firing. They were also tough to work on mechanically. This is the main reason that they didn't produce more of them and is what makes them so scarce today. The gun has the original loading lever intact underneath the barrel. These were made without the forestock. The shoulder stock has a very pleasing look to the Walnut wood and these use a crescent shaped buttplate. The shoulder stock of the gun has a attractive swirl pattern color to the Walnut and you can see it has a great grain. It has the original sling swivel on the back of the frame. If you have wanted a nice original Civil War Colt Revolving carbine without spending $15,000, then this one is for you.
