Small Kerosene Canteen Like Used by Miners
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a neat little piece! This is a small tin drum style canteen. You often see these sold as Confederate canteens but they are actually designed to go on a belt for a miner. They carried kerosene or other oil for head lamps of the early miners. They look just like a Confederate canteen except for the single loop on the back side that goes on the belt. It has the three strap loops on the sides so it could be used with a shoulder sling. It has an ancient cotton sling remnants toed to the loops. At the top it has the original spout intact. The canteen measures 5-3/4ths inches across and is 2 inches thick. It displays quite well as you see.
