This is a nice looking original Civil War .58 caliber cartridge box. This is the style box that would have been used with any of the .58 caliber Springfield or contract maker made rifles of the Civil War. On the outer flap it has the beautiful US cartridge box plate that has a fantastic well worn look. The US on the plate can be seen from across the room. The original brass finial is still present and it has a portion of the closure tab remaining. On the bottom of the box it has both of the roller buckles. On the back of the box it has all of the attachment loops. This style of cartridge box could have been used with a shoulder strap or put on the belt either way. When you open up the outer flap you can see the inner flap and the implement pouch which are both 100% complete. The one side of the implement pouch is separated but still nicely in place by the other side. On the inner flap you can still see the correct Civil War maker's mark of the New York firm of Laura S. Baker. Her husband John A. Baker died in 1862 and she took over control of the firm. She Is one of the very few women that were running companies with military contracts during the Civil War. In 1864 her business was joined by James McKenney to form Baker & McKenney. That lets us know that this box was made between 1862 and 1864. When you look in the innermost compartment it has both of the original cartridge box tins present and they are in excellent condition. The box is accompanied by the modern made REPRODUCTION leather shoulder sling. The sling is modern but the box is Civil War. This is a nice looking and complete Civil War cartridge box by Laura S. Baker made between 1862 and 1864.
