This is an authentic Civil War .36 caliber revolver from the famous Whitney Company. This is the style referred to by collectors as the Whitney Navy revolver. It is called that because of the .36 caliber bore size of the barrel, not particularly because they were used by the navy. These were a favorite of the cavalrymen when they could get one. This gun displays beautifully. The metal parts all have a fine looking attic patina. On the back of the full-length 7-3/4ths inch barrel it has the Whitney maker's mark along with the New Haven, Connecticut production location still visible. Yes this is the same Whitney Company that was founded by Eli Whitney, who is credited with inventing the cotton gin. The action on the gun works well on all positions. It has matching serial numbers of 28,154, even under the grips on each side. According to Flayderman's Guide they made about 33,000 of these revolvers. On the handle it has the original 2-piece walnut grips intact with a beautiful look to the well worn dark wood. This is a great displaying gun from the famous Whitney Company.
