2nd Virginia Infantry 1862 Dated U.S. Oath of Allegiance

here is a very neat document from the heart of the War. This is an original oath of allegiance. These were pre-printed documents that the Southerners were forced to sign to attest that they will "...bear true allegiance to the United States of America and Support its Constitution. ..." and the oath ends with "So help me God.". The paper is printed with the blanks filled in using fine brown ink. It was given to and signed by J.P. Nipe of Hainsville Berkeley County in the State of Virginia. It is hand dated from July 16th 1862 at Williamsport, Maryland and is signed by the Provost Marshall. When I looked up the name I found that there is only one J.P. Nipe listed in the Confederate rosters. James P. Nipe enlisted as a Private int he 2nd Virginia Infantry on March 4th 1862. He was listed as Absent without Leave on March 6th. Evidently he had had enough of the Army and went North to Maryland where he signed the Oath a few months later. The document measures 7-3/4ths inches by 3-3/4ths. It comes with a brief printout of his service.
