Beautiful Early Production Civil War Smith & Wesson Revolver With Bluing Remaining
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful and complete Civil War production Smith & Wesson model No. 2 Army. This one has the low serial number of 3,142 which is well inside of the production numbers of the Civil War. According to the book it would have been made in 1862, which was only the 2nd year of production for these guns. The records show that they started 1862 at the serial number of 2,123 and ended the year at 10,511. It has the full-length 5 inch barrel and along the top of the barrel it has the clear "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS". This is one of the rare early production guns that were produced with the two pins on the top of the frame. Shortly after this one was made they switched to a three pin style construction. The action on the gun works well. The cylinder is the correct early style that has the 6 shot cylinder and you can still read the 1855, 1859 & 1860 patent dates. The handle has the original 2-piece rosewood grips present and they have a great look to the wood with a fine amount of the original varnish hanging on. The gun has a gray surface to the barrel metal with a very nice amount of the original bluing in the protected areas. The frame and cylinder have an ample amount of blue remaining with a great tone. These Smith & Wesson revolvers were utilized during the Civil War by well-to-do officers including General Grant and General Custer. This is a nice complete Civil War .32 caliber rimfire revolver with a very pleasing look that is definitely a step or two above those you usually encounter.
