Beautiful Excavated C.S. In Shield Civil War Confederate Staff Officer Button CS17
Click on an image to enlarge

This is on that you very seldom get a chance to own. It is a very attractive Confederate made 1-piece officer's coat button. It has the eagle with the upturned wings. In the shield on the eagle's chest you can clearly see the bold "CS' letters. It isn't often that you see one of these with sich a clear "CS". The eagle is on a blank background and around the edges it has 13 five pointed stars. This is the pattern that is listed as CS17 in Albert's button book and as CS233a1 in Tice's button book. Most of the time these buttons have poor detail from the manufacture of the die but this one has very clear "CS" as you can see. The lettering is as nice as you could hope for. On the reverse of the button it has lost the original brass shank intact as so often are. All that held the shank on was a small bit of solder. It didn't take much to knock the shank off. This button would be appreciated by any Confederate collector.
