Battle of Stones River! Cool Battle Letter of the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a cool letter. At the end of the letter, it is signed G.M. Noel and when I looked the name up, there was only one soldier with that G. Noel name that was at Stones River. He was George M. Noel who served with the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry and he was writing home to his "Dear brother & Sister". It is written from "Camp Near Murfreesboro teenisee (Tennessee)" and is dated from January 12th 1863. The letter is written in ancient brown ink and it is on the patriotic stationery. When you open the letter up, it measures 9-1/4th inches by 7-3/4th inches. The writing is clear but the fold lines have separated in several spots and a couple of sections are hanging on by a thread. He is writing just after the fierce battle that is known up north as the Battle of Stones River. He has a very folky way of writing that gets his pint across with a lot of style. He tells them that they left on December 25th and arrived at Murfreesboro and skirmished every day on the road. He says that they had no no blankets or fire. They also had no food. He says that the battle started and "...raged all day it stopt about sundown then we fell back on the field and not much to brag of.". He adds that they had nothing to eat that night either because the "rebles" had "... took all of our teames and burnt oure provihons so we had to go on the field hungry. The fite lasted to the third day of the year." He says that they took prisoners and then he "jumpt behind a tree and tha shot teen shots in the tree and i shot as many at them then I thought I wood git back to the rest. you had ought to seene me run and doge (dodge)" He adds that they had "5 of our men wounded and 2 kilt." It is accompanied by a typed transcript and a printout history of Noel and the 77th Pennsylvania. Now this is one COOL LETTER!
