This is a beautiful original non-excavated cuff size Civil War era Michigan state seal button. The face of the button has an excellent amount of the original gold gilt remaining to make the detail show up well on the face. The Michigan state seal shows the shield supported by an elk and a moose. In the shield it shows a man standing on a peninsula under an eagle. The original back is present and the shank is solid as a rock. On the reverse of the button it has the correct Civil War generic backmark that reads "EXTRA QUALITY". They used this so any retailer could sell the button without advertising for the actual maker. This is the version listed as figure MG4av in Albert's button book and MG205as in Tice's button book.
