Here is an authentic 1862 dated Confederate States of
America savings bond. This is the style issued under the act of the Confederate
Congress on August 19th 1861 in the $500 denomination. It is the style that has image of the lady
who is supposed to be the Goddess Commerce with the ship and train in the background. If you
notice there are still six of the original bond coupons intact at the bottom. When
the date arrived that is printed on the bottom of the coupon you could cash it
in for your interest payment. It is correctly hand signed and numbered by the
Confederate Government officials in fine brown ink. This is the Confederate bond
listed as CR-55 in the bond book by Criswell and as #49 in the Confederate Bond Book by Ball. Only 1,132 of these were issued and this is hand numbered "526" in ink. It was lithograph printed by Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond, Virginia and is so marked in the lower part of
the top section. After the Confederacy fell to the Union and the war was over, there were still thousands of dollars of Confederate bonds in banks and private hands over seas. The bonds still had to be accounted for overseas. This stamp shows that this one was accounted for in Amsterdam in November of 1881 on the reverse and their stamp itself on the front. It measures 13-3/4ths inches by 11 inches. This is a very attractive original Confederate states
savings bond with a beautiful center design.
