This is a cool looking gun! This gun is very interesting as well. The lockplate of the gun has the desirable "VIRIGINIA" marking as well as traces of the Manufactory. Behind the hammer it has the Richmond, Virginia production location as well as the 1818 production date. As for the gun itself, it has a very cool design that is the classic Virginia Manufactory muskets. When these guns left the factory in 1818 they were made as a flintlock and were converted later on so they could still be used when the flintlock system was replaced by the percussion system. This is one that was converted by changing the hammer and using a model 1842 pattern barrel. You can tell by the patina that this gun has been in this configuration for eons. It is likely a Southern "Not pretty but functional" conversion. The Barrel is full-length at 42 inches. It has the stud style front sight so a socket bayonet could be attached. The mechanics of the lockplate still catches on both positions. The gun is constructed with with the iron buttplate. It is missing the ramrod in the channel under the barrel. You can tell that this one was standing int he corner of a barn or cabin and the dampness caused the deterioration of the wood around the buttplate. It has both of the original bell style sling swivels intact. The stock of the gun has a gorgeous ancient well worn look to the walnut wood. On the front of the stock, it has a modern addition "WARWIK RANGER" inscription. This is very cool looking original 1818 dated lockplate Virginia Manufactory musket with tons of character.
