Very Rare Original Die Stamp for Making the Model 1872

What a cool piece of history! This is an original metal die for producing hat insignia. This one is for making the Indian War era hat insignia for officers. This is the female side of the die and you can easily see the fine detail it would have produced. In the factory, they would have placed a thin sheet of brass into the mold and applied great pressure to form it into the shape of the cannon. This one makes the Model 1872 iron die for a Staff Corps eagle. These were used primarily on cockades for chapeaus. The die measures approx. 2 1/8 inches by 2 3/8ths inches and is slightly trapezoidal in form. One side of the die is marked "OIL”. You see the insignia fairly often but you almost never get a chance at the mold. WOW!
