Click on an image to enlarge
This is a rare excavated state seal uniform coat button for the state of South Carolina. It is a variation of the button that is listed as figure SC274 in Tice's button book and SC20 in Albert's button book. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." The original back is present on the reverse with the base of original iron shank but the loops is lost to the ages. It has back with the depressed channel with the single star in the channel. This is believed to be the maker's marking from the Columbia, South Carolina maker, Wildt & Kline. This one is in excavated shape and will be a fine addition to your collection.
