Rare EXCAVATED Dowler Backmarked Confederate Staff Officer Coat Button CS7
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a version of this style of button that you don't encounter that often. This is a beautiful excavated coat size version of the Confederate Staff Officer's coat button. You see them occasionally in non-excavated condition but these excavated ones are tough to find. On the face it has the clear droop wing style eagle that denotes serving as a Confederate staff officer. Around the border it has the stars and a lined background. It has some of the original factory gold gilding that makes the detail really stand out. This button has the original back intact with the original shank. It even has some of the original thread inside of the shank. It has the traces of the correct Civil War backmark of "W. DOWLER SUPERIOR QUALITY" which is the mark of the William Dowler Company of Birmingham, England. This is the style listed as CS7 in Albert's button book and CS207A1 in Tice's button book. This version is much tougher to find than the standard Manchester backmark. This fine button would have been imported through the blockade to be sold by the high quality retailers. This would have adorned the front of a Confederate staff officer's coat that would have been proudly worn by that Confederate soldier. It is in very attractive condition and is a must have for any Civil War Confederate button collection.
