This is an excellent non-excavated metallic revolver cartridge. These were produced for the Model 1873 Colt Army revolver. This pattern is illustrated on page #92 of Logan's cartridge book. It is .45 caliber and has the internal cup primer system. It measures 1-5/8ths inches in length which is longer than most of the later manufactured versions. This one is in superb shape all the way around and will make an excellent addition to your 1872 Colt display.
