This is an original gun worm for a Civil War era German Potsdam style musket. These Potsdam or Prussian style muskets were used by both sides of the Civil War. This is the style that is illustrated on page #112 of the gun tool book by Shaffer, Rutledge & Dorsey. These were used for the cleaning out of the musket bore. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition.
