Claudius Redon of New Orleans (1829-1857) Marked Double Barrel Shotgun
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a cool looking pre-Civil War double barrel shotgun. What makes this one extra cool is that it was sold by a New Orleans retailer. Along the spine of the full-length 32-5/8ths inch 16 gauge barrels, it it has the script engraved retailer's marking of "C. Redon * New Orleans". The New Orleans Gunsmiths book by Kit Gorman states that Claudius Redon was born in 1788. In 1829, he opened a store in New Orleans and as early as 1831, he was offering "...single and double barreled guns and pistols, of the best qualities." Redon died in New Orleans in 1857 so we know this gun was made before the Civil War. The gun is made with the double percussion hammers. One of the hammers catch on both position and the other only on one of the positions. The action is a little sticky. This is one of the guns with the very interesting stock designs. It is made of single piece of walnut wood with the underside of the shoulder portion being crafted like the image of a wild boar. It ahs the brass tipped wooden ramrod in the channel under the barrel. It has the old leather shoulder sling still attached. This a very neat antebellum double barrel shotgun from New Orleans.
