This is an excellent original non-excavated cross saber hatpin from the Civil War. The cross saber denoted the cavalry branch of service during the Civil War. These are the style that was designed to look like they were embroidered even though they were manufactured out of stamped brass. This one still has a gorgeous golden tone all over. On the back of the piece it still retains two of the original four attachments loops. They measures 3-1/2 inches by 1-3/4th inches at the widest points. On page 194 of the headgear insignia book by Campbell and O'Donnell they have a similar set pictured at the top of the page as figure #455. This is the classic style that would have adorned the hat of a Civil War cavalryman.
