Hand Written 1865 Oath of Loyalty Paper for a Soldier in the Missouri Militia
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great original oath of Loyalty from the state of Missouri. After the Civil War people were required to sign an oath of loyalty in many areas especially in the areas that were border states and states in secession. This one is from the state of Missouri and in Grundy County. It measures approximately 8 inches by 12 inches in overall size. Most of the time these oaths are done on pre-printed paper with the blanks filled in but not this one. It is entirely hand written using fine old brown ink. The paper makes the person attest that he "... I have always been truly and loyally on the side of the United States against all enemies..." This oath was taken by Captain Cyrus Rarnage on September 8th 1865. It is nicely signed and even has the 5 cent paper tax stamp with the image of George Washington down in the on the back side corner. This is a great piece of reconstruction history and is only $195.00.
