This is a very nice looking gun! This is the massive Colt 3rd Model Dragoon pattern revolver. The last picture shows how big this gun is compared to the smaller .31 caliber Colt "Pocket" model revolver. This is the pattern of the third model that has the 4 screw style frame that could have been used with a shoulderstock if you had one. It has serial numbers of 15,563 on the visible parts. Thanks to Mr. Colt's bookkeepers we know that it would have been made in 1856 which was the 6th year of their production. The metal has a blackish brown color with some pitting and age. On the side of the frame you can see the stamp "COLTS PATENT" mark. The action of the gun still functions. The cylinder has the matching serial numbers still visible. The 7 1/2" barrel has the original German silver blade sight intact. Along the top of the barrel you can vividly read the "ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW YORK CITY" as plain as day. The guns were manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut with the sales office being located in New York City. On the handle of the gun it has the 1-piece walnut wood grips intact with a pleasing "well worn" look to the wood. The brass of the triggerguard has a very pleasing golden tone to the brass. On the bottom of the grip, it has the stamped "CO" stamp and there are letters scratched into the metal but i can't quite make it out. If you have wanted an original Colt .44 dragoon style pistol that saw service and has a cool look, then this one is for you.
