This is a very nice dug brass time fuse holder for a Civil War Hotchkiss pattern cannon shell. This is the classic style that was one of the mainstays in the artillery of the Civil War. It stands about 2 inches tall. This one was ready to fire and was in just the right condition soil to preserve it all the years it was in the ground. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found in the 1960's in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia area. Chancellorsville was a battle between the Confederate forces of Robert E. Lee and Union General Joseph Hooker on April 30th until May 6, 1863. This is a wonderful brass Hotchkiss time fuse.
