Here is a great looking gun that is over 200 years old! This is the flintlock musket that is referred to by collectors as the U.S. Model 1808 musket. This one was made in 1810 and has the vividly clear production date in front of the lockplate hammer. In front of the hammer it has the majority of the maker's mark of "E. STILLMAN". Ethan Stillman of Burlington, CT received his contract to deliver 2,500 muskets to the US government on September 14, 1808. He only delivered a total of 1,425 muskets under the 1808 contract, between 1810 and 1813. He delivered 75 guns in 1810, 325 in 1811, 425 in 1812, and 600 in 1813. The guns he produced were based upon samples provided by the Springfield Arsenal and essentially conform to the variant of US Model 1795 muskets being produced there circa 1808. The barrel is 44-5/8ths inches in length with the usual length of these 1808's being 44 to 45 inches. At the breech of the barrel it is completely unmarked. The lockplate is still in the original flintlock configuration and the action works on the full cock position but slips off of the half cock position. The mainspring is still very strong. It has a replacement pair of sling swivels. The ramrod in the channel under the barrel is missing the threads. The stock is a beautiful piece of American Walnut with deep dark attic tone to the grain. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate you can see the remnants of the cartouche. As you can see the dark walnut wood looks great with the dark tones of the metal parts. This is just a very pleasing looking original flintlock gun from all angles.
