Military Inspected Civil War .36 Caliber Whitney With Grip Cartouche
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an authentic Civil War .36 caliber revolver from the famous Whitney Company. This is the style referred to by collectors as the Whitney Navy revolver. It is called that because of the .36 caliber bore size of the barrel, not particularly because they were used by the navy. This one was sent to the government and we know this because of the small letter sub-inspector stamps on the parts including the barrel, frame and triggerguard. On the top of the full-length 7-3/4ths inch barrel it has the Whitney maker's mark along with the New Haven, Connecticut production location. Yes this is the same Whitney Company that was founded by Eli Whitney, who is credited with inventing the cotton gin. The action on the gun works well on all positions. It has matching serial numbers of 18,344 under the barrel as well as on the inside of the 2-piece walnut wood grips. According to Flayderman's Guide they made about 33,000 of these revolvers. On the handle it has the beautiful pair of original 2-piece walnut grips intact. The grips have a nice patina to the wood with the outline of the inspector cartouche on the left hand side grip. This is a great displaying gun from the famous Whitney Company that we know saw military use.
