Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful authentic Civil War leather cartridge box for the .58 caliber Springfield pattern rifle. This is the model 1864 pattern that has the embossed U.S. proudly displayed on the outer flap. This "US" is nice and clear. The box displays well and has the entire closure tab and brass finial at the bottom. Both of the original two roller buckles are present on the bottom of the box. It has the loops present on the back of the box. These were designed so the box could have been worn on the soldier's belt. When you open up the outer flap you are greeted by the inner flap as well as the implement pocket with flap and it still has the inner closure strap. The inner flap has the vividly clear U.S. ordnance Department inspector stamp to go along with the correct Civil War maker's mark of the Metzger firm of Philadelphia. On the innermost compartment it has both of the original tins that held the cartridges in place. This is a nice original Civil War cartridge box for the .58 caliber Springfield pattern rifles.
