Cool Drum Style Conversion of an 1836 Model Waters Flintlock Dated 1838
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a lot of gun for the money. This gun started out life as a Model 1836 military flintlock. It has the full-length barrel that fires a .54 caliber ball. The lockplate has the 1838productiond ate as well as the Milbury, Massachusetts production location. Waters made these guns from 1837 until 1843. They only made 20,000 of these model 1836 guns. The original swivel style ramrod is intact under the barrel. At the breech of the barrel you can still see the military inspector markings. It has the "US" marking as well as the "JH" inspector initials of Joseph Hannis. When this gun left the factory it used the flintlock system to fire. What is cool about this gun is that they converted it to percussion using a drum style conversion. They replaced the military lockplate with a civilian style lockplate like those used on a country rifle or even a shotgun. It has a cool homespun flare and it is possible it was done by a Southern gunsmith. It still catches on both of the positions. The stock of the gun is made of the single piece of dark walnut wood and on the flat opposite of the lockplate you can still see the remnants of the inspector cartouche. This is a cool look gun with a neat conversion.
